College debt is reaching crisis levels and threatens the stability of our economy.
Donald Trump, Chris Christie, and Jeb Bush think that debt-free college at all public universities is wrong.
Debt-free college is widely popular among Democrats, Republicans and independents -- 71% to 19% according to a GBA Strategies poll of 2016 likely general election voters for the Progressive Change Institute. Even a majority of Republicans -- 56% to 33% -- support debt-free college as well. It is the #1 issue that Democrats who didn't vote in 2014 said would have motivated them to vote.
As Republicans follow each other off the right-wing cliff, progressives are pushing the Democratic Party to the strong general-election ground:

Dear Members of Congress,
A college education is increasingly a prerequisite to getting a well-paying job. But with the cost of college education skyrocketing, we risk a whole generation either being left behind or burdened with crippling debt. Addressing student debt is one of the most urgent issues of our time, and the public wants action.
Proposals to lower interest rates for student loans and make community college affordable are steps in the right direction -- and we support them. But we need a broader goal for our nation, and now is the time to advance one.
We stand ready to mobilize publicly around a national goal of debt-free college at all public institutions of higher learning. All students should have the ability to graduate from college debt-free.
