The people building AI say they cannot control it. Their answer is we should let them write their own rules. Trump calls the danger a "hoax." Congress is leaving town.

Big Tech billionaires shouldn't be allowed to write their own Artificial Intelligence rules. Congress should pass strong oversight to protect the public – and hold corporate lawbreakers accountable.

We would not allow Big Pharma or Wall Street to design their own oversight, and AI should be no different. Public oversight needs real enforcement power over the pace and substance of new models, a mandate covering both human safety and the economic shocks coming at us, and hard limits so AI cannot deny someone health care, fire a worker, or deploy a weapon. And the laws we already have against deploying products that harm the public need to be enforced.

We will put every signature in front of House Democrats before their AI task force finalizes its recommendations, and in front of every Democrat running for Congress this fall.
